The opening round of the 2018 Super One British Karting Championships took place at the PF International Circuit in Grantham, on the 6-8 April.
It was the first Super One British Cadet Karting Championship event for the 2017 BirelART UK Cadet Series Champion Ella Stevens, who moves into the pinnacle of Cadet karting in the UK this season.
Qualifying saw Ella set the 21st fastest time on her maiden Timed Qualifying Session in her Immun'Age and Corehard supported entry. This is where she would start both of her racing Heats, to determine where she would start for the first of the two Finals.
Heat One saw Ella make a brilliant start to vault herself into 18th at the end of the first lap. She was in a battle for the top 20 throughout the race, where she finished her first racing heat in 20th position after being a part of a five way fight for seventeenth position.
The second heat saw Ella knocked off the circuit at the start, dropping her to the back of the field in 28th position. She managed to make solid progress to recover some of the lost positions to move up into 24th place by the fourth lap of the race. Despite being now stuck in a train of karts battling for position, Ella managed to use good race-craft to navigate past two rivals on the final lap to finish the heat in 22nd position.
Her heat results gave Ella a starting position of 22nd for the first of the two finals of the weekend.
Final One saw Ella lose a pair of positions at the end of the first lap as the drivers bunched up around the 'Bridge' section of the track. However by the third lap of the race, she had recovered those positions back. After a combative race, Ella managed to cross the line in the same position that she started it, taking 22nd at the flag.
The Grand Final saw Ella make a good start to get herself into 19th position after the opening lap. However in all the commotion and battling for position, Ella appeared to have suffered from some damage, as she was dropping through the pack and unable to show the pace she had shown earlier in the weekend. Nevertheless, she battled on, brought the kart home in 25th position to complete her Super One racing debut.
The second round of the championship will take place at Whilton Mill in Daventry on the 27-29 April.
